Today, Wondery announced a new investigative true crime podcast series, Scam Factory, uncovering the sinister world of scam compounds and the unsuspecting people conned to live and work within. Hosted and reported by Denise Chan (Fed Up, Over My Dead Body: Gone Hunting), Scam Factory recounts one sister’s harrowing journey to free her brother from these ruthless operations, only to uncover a horrifying reality: their only chance to escape is to scam their way out. Scam Factory debuts early and ad-free on Wondery+ on February 10, and will be available everywhere you get your podcasts starting February 24.
Spam texts, calls and emails have become increasingly common, with many people likely dismissing them as mere annoyances and casually hitting delete. But the shocking truth is that the person behind that message might be trapped inside a “scam factory” on the other side of the world, where they’re forced to scam others against their will for more than 14 hours every day. Through first-hand accounts and bombshell revelations, Scam Factory exposes the multi-billion dollar empire of scam syndicates that traffick people with promises of amazing jobs, and their use of disturbing tactics to trap victims in a living hell.
The series follows Charlie, a 30-something woman from the Philippines who helps her younger brother Max land a dream job abroad. But when Max arrives, the job does not exist. Instead, he is trapped in a heavily-guarded compound where armed guards have shoot-to-kill orders. For Charlie, the only way to free her beloved brother is to dive deeper into the underworld.
Scam Factory is reported by Chan, a journalist and audio & documentary producer. She was a producer on two of Wondery’s #1 hit podcasts, Fed Up and Over My Dead Body: Gone Hunting. Her investigative documentaries for KCET’s esteemed news show, SoCal Connected, have delved into critical issues across various industries, such as recycling, college admissions, cannabis, and law enforcement. Chan’s work has earned a regional Edward R. Murrow Award for Best Investigative Reporting, a Golden Mike Award for Best Television Medical and Scientific Reporting, an LA Press Club Award, and multiple Emmy nominations.
Scam Factory is an original Wondery production.
